Law studies at the University of Zurich with language und study stays in Paris and Calgary.
Entered a law practice (1989) following training period at the district court in Bremgarten. Passed bar exam. Worked as a lawyer since 1991. Partner at Fricker + Leuthard with offices in Wohlen und Muri AG.

Member of the Aargau cantonal parliament from 1997 to 2000.
Member of the Expert Commission on Gender Equality and the Justice Commission.

Member of the National Council from 1999 to 2006
President of the CVP Switzerland from 2004 to 15.6.2006

Elected to the Federal Council on 14 June 2006. Took up office as head of the Federal Depart-ment of Economic Affairs on 1 August 2006.
