Dr. Lorenz Hilty 

  
 

Dr. Lorenz Hilty (*1959 in St. Gallen) heads the Department of Sustainable Information Technology at EMPA and is Professor of Business Informatics at the University of Applied Science in Solothurn Northwest Switzerland (FHSO) (since autumn 2000 with a reduced syllabus). He studied Computer Science and Psychology at the University of Hamburg. Doctorate in Computer Science in 1991, research residency at the Institute for Economy and the Environment at the University of St.Gallen in 1992-93, qualified as lecturer in 1996 with “Contributions of Infor-mation Technology to Sustainable Development“, Project Leader at the Research Institute for Applied Knowledge Processing (FAW) at the Univer-sity of Ulm in 1996-98, Lecturer at the FHSO since 1998. Dr. Hilty is Swiss Delegate in the IFIP TC 9 (Technical Committee “Computers and Society” of the Inter-na-tional Federation for Information Processing), spokesman of the committee on “Information Technology in Environmental Protection” of the Gesellschaft für Infor-matik, chairman of the special interest group “I + G” (Information Technology and Society) of the Swiss Informaticians Society, lecturer at the Univer-sity of Basel, as well as author and editor of numerous specialist articles and books in fields related to information technology and sustainability. In 2002-2003, on behalf of the Centre for Technology Assessment (TA-Swiss), he headed the project “The Principle of Precaution in an Information Society: Pervasive Computing and its Effects on Health and on the Environment.“
