Prof. Pierre Alain Clavien

Pierre A. Clavien (*1957 in Geneva) studied Medicine at the University of Geneva. From 1982 to 1983 he worked as a doctor for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Peru and El Salvador.

From 1983 to 1988 he was a surgeon at Morges hospital and at the university hospitals of Basel and Geneva. From 1989 to 1992 he was engaged in research at the University of Toronto (PhD). In 1993 he performed liver transplantations at the General Hospital of Toronto.

From 1994 to 2000 he was Director of the Liver Transplantation Program at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. In 1999 he was appointed Professor. Since 2000 he has been Professor and Director of the Department of Visceral and Transplantation Surgery at the University Hospital in Zürich. He has received over 20 honours and awards and published over 180 articles.
