Prof. em. Walter Siegenthaler

Walter Siegenthaler (*1923 in Davos-Platz) studied Medicine at the University of Zürich, where he qualified in 1961. Between 1961 and 1969 he worked at the Medical School of Stanford University in Palo Alto and at the University Zürich. In 1969 he became Professor and Director of the University Polyclinic in Bonn and also worked in the Medical Faculty at the University of Zürich. From 1971 to 1991 he was Director of the Department of Internal Medicine.

His immense scientific experience is reflected in over 800 publications in newspapers and books. He has been a member and honorary member of many important societies and organi-zations and has received numerous awards. In 1991 he received an honorary doctorate from the Martin Luther University of Halle Wittenberg.

From 1992 until 2004, he was President of the Swiss Research Institute for High-Mountain Climate and Medicine in Davos. He fosters the rising academic generation in the Medical Faculty of the University of Zürich through the Walter and Gertrud Siegenthaler Foundation.
