Roger de Weck, Journalist, Berlin, Zurich, Germany, Switzerland Born in Fribourg, Switzerland, in 1953, Roger de Weck spent the years 1955-62 in Geneva. In 1962 his family moved to Zurich, and in 1972 he graduated from that city’s Literary Gymnasium with a diploma in Latin and Greek. In 1976 he obtained his Master’s Degree in economics from the St. Gallen University. The years 1976-78 were spent as a trainee with the newspaper “Tribune de Genève” in Geneva. In 1978 Roger de Weck published, as co-author with Max Mabillard, the “Scandale au Crédit Suisse” (German title, “Der Fall Chiasso” - or “The Chiasso Affair”), and in 1979 he served as correspondent for the “Tribune de Genève” and for the daily “24 heures” (24 Hours) in Zurich. From 1980 to 1982, he was the economics editor for “Die Weltwoche,” a prestigious weekly newspaper in Zurich. In 1983-84 he served as an editor at “Die Zeit” in Hamburg, Germany, and from 1984-88 he was the French correspondent for “Die Zeit,” based in Paris. The year 1989 was spent as a trainee at the headquarters of “Die Zeit” back in Hamburg, preparatory to becoming that journal’s chief economics editor from 1990 to 1992. Between 1992 and 1997, Mr. de Weck was editor-in-chief of the “Tages-Anzeiger” in Zurich, and from 1997 to the year 2000 editor-in-chief of “Die Zeit” in Hamburg. Since 2001 he has been a freelance publicist in both Berlin and Zurich, as well as co-founder of “mediainquiries.net” based in Munich. Since 2002, Roger de Weck has been also a professor at the Collège d’Europe in Bruges. He is married and has four children. He is bilingual in French and German, and also has Spanish and English. His special interests include: history; literature; European economic policy, banking and finance, and management policy. He is president of “europe - unsere gemeinsache, notre cause commune” (“europe - our common cause”), a member of the Pen Club, and of the Board of Trustees of the Karls Prize (Aachen), advisor to the foreign policy journal “Critique internationale” (Paris), advisor to the Initiative and Referendum Institute (IRI - Amsterdam), and a member of the following: the Curatorium of the Theodor Heuss Foundation (Stuttgart); the Curatorium of the Franco-German Society Cluny; the Curatorium of the Humboldt Economic Forum (Berlin); the International Advisory Board of the Centre for European Policy Studies (Brussels); the Advisory Board on European Journalism Fellowships (Berlin); the Akademie für Publizistik (Hamburg); the Academy of the Spoken Word (Stuttgart); the Jury for the Milena Jesenska Prize (IWM, Vienna), and the Jury for the Schmidheiny Prize (St. Gallen). |
